Sheriff Office Function

The Sheriff serves as the County's chief law enforcement officer, charged with the responsibility of policing the County and keeping the peace, including the power to make arrests. The Sheriff may not serve more than two (2) consecutive terms. It is required to be a full-time position. The Sheriff has responsibility for administration of the jail and custody of the inmates. In addition to duties related to law enforcement, the Sheriff also serves as the Treasurer of the County and collects all taxes levied by the County. To assist Sheriff Childers in the performance of his duties, law enforcement deputies, tax deputies and legal process deputies are employed.

 

Sheriff's duties include:
  • Serve and execute all returns, notices and processes issued by the courts which must be served in the county.
  • Act as bailiff in court proceedings
  • Enforce court orders
  • Administer transportation of prisoners, mental patients and extraditions
  • Issue licenses to citizens who apply for a concealed weapons permit
  • Administer the financial matters of adults who are unable to do so for themselves
  • Collect all state, county, municipal and school taxes; disburse money to appropriate agencies
  • Maintain all tax records
  • Enforce payment of delinquent taxes
 

Duties of the Treasurer

  • The sheriff must take the oath of office before the County Commission prior to taking office.
  • The sheriff must file a manual signature with with the Secretary of State before he/she may use a facsimile of their signature.
  • The sheriff is the ex officio County Treasurer. As the County Treasurer she/he collects

Chief Deputy, Kirby Hanson

Sheriff James Childers has been a resident of Greenbrier County since 1971.

Jim first served the public as a State Police Trooper. As such, he was the District Commander-Officer in charge of the Third District of Company "D", which included Lewisburg, Rainelle, Hinton and Union Detachments. Jim's other responsibilities as a State Trooper included supervised all uniform and civilian employees, prepared work schedules, dealt with budgetary matters and expenditures and worked with public needs and responded to investigate citizen and employee complaints.

Jim has also worked for the West Virginia Division of Highways as a Construction Supervisor and Highway Administrator II.

Jim is a member of American Association of State Troopers, West Virginia Troopers Association, Fraternal Order of Police State Lodge #107, Past Master Greenbrier Lodge #42 AF & AM, Ronceverte Chapter Royal Arch Masons, Greenbrier Commandery #15, Beni Kedem Shrine (Charleston), Greenbrier Valley Shrine Club and Lewisburg Elks #1758.

Sheriff Childers holds a BA in Criminal Justice from Bluefield State.
